How to Get Found in AI Search

Something shifted in how clients find businesses. It happened gradually, then quickly. Understanding what it takes to get found in AI search is the first step to doing something about it.

“Get found in AI search” is not the same as ranking on Google. AI tools do not return a list. They return one answer. This is how to make sure that answer includes your business.

People are not using AI because it is new.
They are using it because it removes friction from a decision they already want to make. That shift in psychology is what separates a visible business from an invisible one.

It starts with how the search itself changed.
Traditional search returns ten links and asks the user to evaluate them. AI returns one answer and asks the user to act on it. A buyer looking for a service provider no longer wants a list. They want a recommendation they trust enough to contact. If your business is not structured to be that recommendation, it simply is not considered.

The trust dynamic reinforces this further.
When an AI cites a business, buyers perceive it as a vetted recommendation, not just a result that paid to appear or ranked well. Being cited carries significantly more weight than ranking. That is a fundamental shift in how credibility is assigned online.

Time plays a role too.
AI compresses the research phase in a way nothing has before. A buyer who previously spent 20 minutes comparing websites now gets a summary in 30 seconds. By the time they reach your website, they have often already formed an opinion, based entirely on whether you appeared in the AI answer at all.

The generational angle makes this urgent rather than theoretical.
Nearly 35% of Gen Z now use AI tools as their primary search method. This generation treats AI answers the way older generations treated the first Google result: reliable enough to act on. They are less likely to cross-reference and more likely to contact the business the AI names first.

Finally, the queries themselves have changed. Instead of typing two keywords into Google, buyers now ask AI tools full questions that describe their situation, constraints and timing. Content built for short keyword queries misses the decision-style question entirely. That mismatch is where most businesses are losing ground right now without knowing it.

The numbers behind the shift

The behaviour change is measurable and the data is consistent across sources.

36% of people have already replaced traditional search with AI for some queries. That share is growing. Gartner projects a 25% drop in traditional search volume as AI absorbs more of the decision-stage queries. BrightEdge data shows that 80% of the sources AI tools cite do not even appear in Google’s top 100 results for the same query. And Semrush reports that visitors arriving via AI referral convert at 4.4 times the rate of standard organic search traffic.

That last number is the one worth sitting with. AI-referred visitors are not browsers. They are buyers who have already asked their question and received an answer that pointed them to you. The intent is further along, the decision is closer, and the conversion follows.

The visibility gap most businesses have not noticed

AI tools do not crawl rankings. They extract answers. A page that ranks well but is not structured for answer extraction simply does not exist in AI search. That gap is affecting most businesses right now, and most have not noticed because their Google traffic has not dropped yet.

The structural difference matters here. Traditional SEO asks: can Google’s crawler index and rank this page? AI visibility asks something different: can an AI tool extract a direct, useful answer from this content and cite it with confidence? Those are not the same question, and they do not have the same answer.

Businesses optimising only for rankings are managing one half of a two-part problem. The other half is answer structure, semantic clarity, FAQ logic and consistent terminology. None of that is technically difficult. Most of it has just not been applied yet because the need was not visible until recently.

Search behaviour has already changed. What it actually takes to get found in AI search

People increasingly ask AI tools for recommendations, comparisons and direct answers before they ever visit a website. That changes how businesses are discovered, evaluated and trusted online.

Traditional SEO still matters. Rankings still drive traffic and that will remain true. But rankings alone no longer guarantee visibility during the decision process. A business can rank on page one of Google and be completely absent from every AI answer in its category.

Businesses that combine strong search foundations with structured, AI-readable content will be significantly easier to discover across both Google and AI-driven search environments over the next few years. The ones building that now are doing so while most competitors have not started.

The question is no longer only where your business ranks. It is whether your business gets found when the decision is already being made.

Ramiro Arto Vázquez

I focus on how companies are perceived even before a conversation begins. My work combines AI visibility, search behavior, communication systems, and digital trust to make companies visible at the exact moment customers decide.

Businesses are not competing for clicks alone anymore. They are competing to appear in the answers people trust before they ever visit a website. The companies adapting now are building visibility across both traditional search and AI-driven discovery, before the gap becomes difficult to close.
